![]() Flight Instruction Learning to fly helicopters is a challenging and very rewarding experience. It takes time and dedication. With WNY Helicopters, we take pride in teaching people to fly. What you will be working toward. Private Pilot License The private pilot license is where you will start your journey into flying. Whether you are learning to fly helicopters for fun or for a career, this is your starting point. A private pilots license entitles you to fly for yourself and take passengers but, you are not allowed to receive any compensation for your time and you must pay a pro-rated share of the expenses. To become a private pilot, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) mandates that you must meet the following requirements: * 61.103 Eligibility requirements: * To be eligible for a private pilot certificate, a person must: * Be at least 17 years of age * Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operation limitation on that applicants pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft. * Pass the require knowledge test on aeronautical knowledge * Pass a Practical test. The FAA states, you must have a minimum of 40 hours of flight time to apply for a private pilot license. However, the average time to obtain your license will vary by how quickly you learn. Most people take their check ride (practical test, containing ground questioning, and a flight test) around 45 to 50 hours. Thirty-five of those hours will be spent with your instructor learning all the different maneuvers of the helicopters. The rest of the time will be spent with you practicing in the helicopter alone. You will need around 50 hours learning the knowledge that goes along with flying, with your instructor. This time depends widely on the student and how much they study. Costs: To obtain your Private Pilots License you will spend around $13,840. This figure includes: (Based on minimum needed) * 30 hours dual instruction________________@ $ 285/hr

This license will allow you to receive compensation for your flight time. Being a professional pilot is a very rewarding experience, whether you are teaching people to fly (after adding on a CFI rating), Flying an EMS chopper to rescue people in need, putting out fires, filming a high speed police pursuit for the news, or flying corporate helicopters, it is a one of a kind feeling. Most people can get pretty close to this mark. After your private pilot license you will spend more time with your instructor honing your skills and learning new advanced maneuvers. At this stage you will work on off airport landings and advanced auto-rotation techniques. You will also spend more time flying alone, working to improve your skills.
